“We had a whole bunch of uptempo, fun songs and a whole bunch of really beautiful, really atmospheric slow songs. We felt that all of these tracks together really represented the two sides of what I do. So we said, ‘Why not make a double album and not interfere with either groove? We’ll just have one album that’s totally upbeat, and another that’s more relaxed and introspective.’” - Candy Dulfer

When it comes to modern Funk, the musician that immediately comes to my mind is that saxy siren, Candy Dulfer.
How well does her latest album hold up? Incredibly well.

The first thing to know about Candy is that she isn't just another pretty face. She can improvise and play straight-ahead Jazz as well as any cat with the elegance and grace that you would expect no less of from such a classy lady.

In Funked Up & Chilled Out (the special edition of her tenth studio album), Candy dives in and mixes elements of Jazz, R&B and Hip-Hop into her own special kind of Funk. The resulting musical variety found on this album is incredibly refreshing and delivers a mind-blowing listening experience.

The first CD of the special edition set is entitled Funked Up and is made up of twelve energetic, funky tracks. The grooves are hot and Candy attacks the songs with that hard-coolness one would expect from top quality Funk.

The following half, Chilled Out , dives into the smoother side of things with plenty of ambience and down-tempo to spare. Candy shows us that she can be smooth, but in a way unlike typically soulless Smooth Jazz, she fills her notes with life, mystery and a yearning.

It's rare these days to find a single album offering such a diverse musical journey. Candy's latest album does this and more. Although purists may find her music a little too watered-down, It's hard to group her with all the other Smooth Jazz artists. This album shows that Candy is, at the core, a risk-taker and an incredible Saxophone player.

This is an extremely well put-together album, and I highly recommend it to any Funk-cats out there or people looking for a smooth, yet abrasive Jazz experience.

My score: ★★★★1/2

"Common sense was telling me to stay away, that it had the makings of a big mess. All that bass and drums could end up sounding muddy, clumsy, directionless, unfocused. But my imagination kept leading me back to this idea, and, at a certain point, I decided it was worth a try". - Joshua Redman

In 2007's "Back East", Joshua Redman experimented with the Bass, Drum and Saxophone trio format which makes up this fantastic album.
Drawing heavy inspiration from Sonny Rollin's "Way Out West", Joshua throws conventionality to the wind and relies solely on his musical instincts. His "Compass".

The results? A haunting Post-bop journey of throbbing melodies. Embracing a spontaneous, experimental nature which is at the very heart of Jazz; this album is not for the fainthearted.

Joshua Redman's remarkable skill , musicianship and class shine through every track. There is an overarching feeling of quality and perfection which one would not expect less of from such a master.
Rogers, Grenadier, Blade and Hutchinson all do equally as well playing back and forth and around Joshua's ideas, adding color and substance to the already deep, melodic expressions.

The moods vary from track to track, but seem to agree universally about the mystery and uncertainty of the future of Jazz and humanity itself.

Overall, this is an amazing album, one which ranks high in my personal collection. I recommend it to anyone who has been around the Jazz scene for awhile, or anyone interested in Bebop and experimental flavors in music.
